What do Rey, Dorothy Gale, and King Arthur have in common? Well, as it turns out, quite a bit. Sort of. Today we look at Rey’s character arc, and how it connects to both classic “hero’s journey” narratives, and something a bit newer. Oh, and we talk about Labyrinth. That happens too.
I think what’s more inticing about it all is that Rey’s journey isn’t over yet and, with how The Last Jedi ended, she’s up crap’s creek without a paddle. Luke claims “we passed on all the we know”, but she never even got the third lesson that he promised to teach her.
Now without much help or someone direct to seek, she really IS alone. We can see the cut of her jib, pre-Force again, which is when I favor Rey, but above all we get to see who she is with everything taken away, you know?
